Iguana is located 50 km north of Costa Rica and 75 km southwest of the capitol, Managua. With prevailing offshore vientos over 300 days a year and water temps between 69-75 degrees, the surf gets sick. The season typically starts in April and ends in August, with swells arriving year round. Of all the spots to surf in Nica, Colorados and Panga Drops are among the best. While others are paying $125+ per day to rent a panga to get to these two spots, the beach is right out front.
Colorados is a river mouth on the south end of the beach that offers hollow and fast waves. Rio Colorado runs off into the ocean year round, providing well formed sandbars. Olas heights start small and can hold up to double + overhead, with a sandy bottom and no rocks or reef to negotiate. This is a fast left and right that barrels hard and often. Panga Drops is located in the middle of la playa and serves up a different type of wave. The wave barrels less but can hold large swells from slightly more angles. The break is set on top of a rocky reef that fluctuates with the moving tides and offers more shoulders and longer rides. Popoyo is another one of Nicas best and most popular breaks. From Iguana, Popoyo is about 1 hour driving time to the north and can be day tripped. Maderas, near San Juan Del Sur is about 2.5 hours to the south and within striking distance as well. We do not recommend driving after dark as the roads are not lit and are peligroso at night. |
